A Lil’ Info About Me…
My name is Isabelle and I am passionate about helping seniors and our elderly to live fuller, more empowered lives.
I feel blessed to have been able to help look after a senior friend of mine that passed away a few years ago. During this time, I got to learn a lot about the system and how the elderly are looked after in our society. For the most part, it’s pretty good! But I also learned some serious things about how if seniors do not take initial steps to make plans for and protect their wishes for their future, someone else will eventually take the reigns. This other person is usually a family member and/or the government.
My employment background is varied and includes working as a Massage Practitioner, a Health Information Management Professional, and also several years in the alarm business (safety/security), which has helped me look at the needs of seniors from a holistic, yet analytical, and safety perspective.
A few years ago, I helped my roommate and good friend Len, look after his sister Ruth who was no longer in a position to take care of herself on her own. It was a real honour and privilege to be allowed into her circle of care. It was a grounding experience, and opened my eyes to the extra needs of seniors that are sometimes missed.
So, the reason I created this blog was to help our golden agers (boomers, seniors, elderly) and loving caregivers, by providing your with helpful information, tools and tips to enable people live a more comfortable, gratifying life – the best one ever!
To do this, I am going to share some insight based on my my personal experience in living with a wonderful senior, and some information that I have discovered over the years through my previous work history.
Some of The Things I have learned:
Elderly Support Services are Out There!
While I helped look after Ruth, I learned a lot of things along the way that I had no idea about! This made me think about all of the other caregivers that might not have all the information that they need to give the best care to their parents. For example, I had no idea that in my community there are Nurses that can come visit your home for free, in addition to home care workers, if you are a senior or elder needing extra help at home. But in the case of where we lived, one first had to make an appointment through the local health care authority. Then what happens is they send different types of workers to your home to make assessments on your needs. The type of care one can receive could be daily or weekly care including: assessing needs for assistive equipment and devices, showers, light cleaning and cooking, specialized nurses that come to clip your toenails and make sure your feet don’t get infected, nutritional counseling for diabetics, home delivery meals and services, and training on the correct way to give intramuscular injections. Did you know that each type of medication needs to be injected in a specific area of the body? For example, insulin is best injected in parts of the body where there is usually more fat (ex. in the belly).

Know someone who is a Superstar?
love hearing stories about all the amazing people, along with the happenings and events that are going on in communities. It is so inspiring to see empowered elders out and about in the garden, or volunteering their time at their favorite local organization. Not long ago, I saw a lady who was about 85 years old doing yoga. And she did a better job than me – now how incredibly inspiring is that?! These are just a few types of the stories I want to write about – I hope that you will enjoy them and feel motivated by them.
So, if you have anything interesting that you want to share or any opinions of any of the content I have created on my site, I’d love to hear from you. Perhaps you know someone that is a Senior Superstar that you’d like people to know about? Write me your story and include a picture of the person you’d like to talk about, and if chosen, I will showcase it in my next blog for the readers to enjoy.
